Two doses are required for full protection. The vaccine is licensed from 12 months of age.
Effectiveness Note
The vaccine is approximately 90% to 95% effective with two doses. With one dose, the effectiveness is about 70-85%, but a milder illness could result. Protection usually develops within 2-3 weeks after the vaccination is given. If a vaccinated person suffers from chickenpox, it will generally have fewer spots, lower fever, and minimal complications.

The vaccine trains the immune system to recognize the varicella zoster virus so that when exposed, the body can react much quicker. There is a reduction by more than 90% of the severity of the cases (hospitalizations, death, and the like) due to varicella where the varicella vaccine has been broadly implemented in different countries.
